Missy Elliot Makes History in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

While there are many inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Missy Elliot now has the honor of being the first female rapper to join the group. She was welcomed by Queen Latifah, who inducted her and told her how proud she was to see her make history. During her acceptance speech, Missy talked about the people who had helped her along the way, and how far away the Hall of Fame often feels for rappers, and especially for women. Video tributes from Cardi B, Pharell, Megan Thee Stallion, and others were also a part of the ceremony, where they shared the groundbreaking nature of Missy's work.

As for Missy, she took time to acknowledge how many people have worked to make this induction into the Hall of Fame a reality for her, and what this will mean for rappers in the future. They see what's possible now, and that can change the game for them as they look into moving forward with their own music, goals, plans, and dreams.

Hip-hop artists have been included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame before, but previous inductees were all male. As the first female rapper, Missy has not only made history, but has provided a new set of goalposts for up-and-coming women rappers, as well. The hip-hop world has been changed by what Missy has offered, and it's never been the same since her arrival. This honor is just one of many she's received throughout her career, but it's a milestone of great significance for her and for female hip-hop and rap artists everywhere.

The ceremony was streamed live this year, which was the first time that had been done. There will be plenty of opportunities to watch it in 2024, as well, as it's being added to Hulu and Disney+ for viewers who have those services. It will also air on January 1 on ABC, so anyone who missed this historic event can see Missy's induction into the Hall of Fame and hear her acceptance speech.
